Adopt-A-Native-Elder Annual Rug Show

Adopt-A-Native-Elder Annual Rug Show

For over 25 years the Adopt-A-Native-Elder Annual Rug Show has called Park City home. As the leaves begin to fall and the air tinges with the winter chill, we wait in anticipation and excitement to view the year’s offerings of hand woven Navajo rugs, craft jewelry, traditional baskets, and mostly the smiling and welcoming faces of the various Dine’ (or Navajo) families. The elders travel from their traditional tribal lands in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona up to the (often snowy) mountains of Park City. Park City Lodging is a proud supporter of the Adopt-A-Native-Elder program. Each year we provide lodging for some of the Elders and their families who undertake the long trek.

Each year the show celebrates a different style of rug weaving. This November the event will showcase the Teec Nos Pos style of weaving, known to be the most intricate of all weaves. Remarkably, each rug is meticulously woven by hand, they say you can feel the hands of the individual weaver in each rug. To give an idea of what an incredible task this is, a typical 4’x6’ rug takes an average weaver up to three months to create (working full time), while the more intricate styles can take up to six months!

The Adopt-A-Native-Elder program started in the 1980’s as a way to support the traditional lifestyle of the Native populations that live in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Today the program supports over 500 Native elders with food, simple medicines, clothing, fabric, and yarns. 100% of all proceeds made at the annual Rug Show go directly to the families. It’s quite an experience to fall in love with a rug, meet the weaver, and know that every cent of your purchase is going to support their traditional lifestyle.

This year’s event marks the 28th year and will be held at Deer Valley Resort’s Snow Park Lodge from November 10-12. In addition to viewing the rugs, jewelry, and woven baskets, you can enjoy weaving demonstrations, Navajo children’s dances, and the unforgettable – and absolutely hilarious – Native American Grandma and Grandpa Idol contest!
