Little Cottonwood Canyon
Snowbird is in the heart of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Little Cottonwood Canyon, one mile down canyon from Alta. Snowbird averages approximately 500 inches of low-density, “dry” Utah powder annually. Thanks to ideal geography and a phenomenon called Lake Effect, Little Cottonwood Canyon powder is known worldwide.
Alta is one of the oldest ski areas in the U.S. and is one of just three ski areas in the U.S. that limit access to skiers only. Though widely respected as one of the most challenging of in-bounds ski areas in the world, Alta has always viewed itself as a local’s and family oriented ski area with some 40% of its terrain devoted to intermediate and beginner skiers.
Big Cottonwood Canyon
Brighton Ski Resort was the first ski resort in Utah, and one of the first in the United States. Most skiers and riders stick to the immaculately groomed trails, but there are trees and chutes, cliffs and natural terrain parks all within bounds for those who like white knuckle terrain. Brighton is also known for its extensive backcountry access, visitors can purchase single ride lift tickets to reach the backcountry access gates at the top of the resort.
Solitude is one of the smaller ski resorts near Salt Lake City, along with its neighbor Brighton. It is a family-oriented mountain, with a wider range of beginner and intermediate slopes than other nearby ski resorts; 70% of its slopes are graded “beginner” or “intermediate,” the highest such ratio in the Salt Lake City area. With over 1200 acres of skiable terrain, Solitude is one of Utah’s most intimate and inviting winter resorts.
