Utah Liquor Laws

Return to: Home Page > Park City Information > Park City Restaurants

One thing that often confuses first time visitors to Utah are the state’s unique laws regarding the consumption of alcohol in public establishments. Here’s what you need to know.

There are three types of places you can get an alcoholic beverage:

Bars or “private clubs”
In Utah bars are called private clubs and require a “membership” to drink there. A membership usually costs about $4 and is good for 3 weeks and you are also allowed to bring in seven guests under one membership. 1am is the standard closing time for all bars, which is earlier than many people are used to, especially if you are coming from somewhere like New York City!

Restaurants
Restaurants are allowed to serve beer, wine and liquor with food.

Brew Pubs/Taverns
These are places that are only allowed to serve beer.

Other facts
You can also now have two drinks on the table at the same time, a restriction that was lifted several years ago.

Beer that is served at bars and sold at grocery stores can only contain 3.2 % alcohol.

Liquor is only served at 2.75 ounce per serving, which is restricted by a measure on the bottle.

State owned liquor stores are the only places to buy liquor, beer and wine all in one place. The beer here is full strength beer, not the 3.2 that is required elsewhere. Prices at these stores are often much higher than what one would find elsewhere due to state taxes.
