There are many good places to climb within a short drive of Salt Lake City, no matter whether you are looking for long trad routes on granite or short sport climbs.
Big Cottonwood Canyon
This is the spot if you are looking for fun sport climbing on bomber quartzite. There are also some good longer outings in the canyon as well. Not as famous as its sister canyon to the south, you wont find as many crowds. There is climbing on both sides of the canyon, so you can chase sun or shade depending on the time of year. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
Little Cottonwood Canyon
This is considered by many to be some of the finest granite climbing in the country. The perfect white rock offers up a variety of cracks, slabs and roofs to challenge climbers of all ability levels. The majority of the climbing takes places on south facing walls, making this an ideal spot for the cooler months. You definitely want to seek shade in the summer. The majority of the climbing is gear protected, but there are also some excellent sport climbs, and fantastic bouldering as well. This canyon is truly a climbers’ playground.
Uinta Mountains
The Uinta Mountains have become a regional hot spot for rock climbing due to cool summer temperatures and an incredible setting among high alpine lakes, aspen trees and 13,000’ peaks. The cliffs are composed of quartzite, a bullet hard rock that lends itself to very climbable features and there are routes for climbers of all ability levels. Most of the crags are only a short walk from the car and many sit above picturesque alpine lakes. You’ll only need a rope and a dozen or so quickdraws to attempt the mostly bolt protected routes here.
White Pine Touring offers guided trips to the area. Rock Climbing is dangerous and getting experience with a qualified guide is an excellent way to try this exciting sport.
